Bartleby Objects

Bartleby Objects is a multi-disciplinary design studio, making objects of use for the home and individual. We feel strongly that style can be substance, form is a function, and fashion is not frivolous. We make objects that address the needs of work, engage in a relationship to the body, and respond to notions of desire, economy, and power. We are primarily concerned with offering a set of solutions to make daily life a little sweeter, a little easier. We consider our goods to be gender-neutral but not explicitly masculine in aesthetic.

All of our leathergoods adhere to two primary principles: longevity and sustainability. We're committed to heritage tanneries, that utilise the centuries-old process of vegetable-tanning leathers. The Bridle leathers are sourced from the last remaining veg-tannery on the East Coast, custom-split to our specifications. Our Italian Vegetable-tanned leather (all other colours) are provided by founding member of the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetal.

The Italian bovine hides are a by-product of food production. To the strict adherence of the EU farming standards, the animals are humanely treated and responsibly raised, resulting in hides of exceptional quality. The tanning process is metal-free and relies on natural tannins, lime, and vegetal extracts to imbue the skins with their characteristic firmness, coloration, and earthy scent.

Our commitment to veg-tanned leathers means that all Bartleby Objects leathergoods are processed in accordance to ecologically responsible waste disposal, proper working conditions, and will eventually biodegrade without contributing pollutants to our natural resources.

We used fur sparingly, and are committed to ethical sourcing. We source our baby alpaca furs from a farm that only collect hides from their animals that die of natural causes. Alpacas typically live for about 25 years, and their fur is far too valuable as a yarn for the full length of their lives to be raised for their hides. As a result, our goods that utilise furs are few and far between, and made in limited quantities.

Our textiles are generally 100% natural fibre content. Our cottons. linens, and wools not blended with nylons, rayon, or polyester, and will biodegrade. Our wood objects are made with off-cuts from local furniture production or milled from certified responsibly source wood. The products are unsealed, or very lightly sealed with oils and waxes to age as naturally as our leathergoods.
