 Gemma Gambee Lewis
Marks, Series V, February 2024

Artist Statement:

For me this work is a prayer. I experience a sense of sacredness when I allow myself to become completely present to the experience of my brush and its paint moving around the paper.

Since I was a very young person I found a similar feeling in prayer as in drawing.  It’s that space in myself that these marks come from.  It's void of the inner critic and there is a deep sense of continuous peace.  Simply said, it is a quiet way I communicate with myself. There is a cherished intimacy that I hope others are able to see and feel.

-----

Intention Setting:

I initially made these works for myself, then for my students, closest friends and family. Eventually, I started painting them for groups of 300-500 people at Quiet Mornings at MoMa.  Each artwork was carefully placed on a meditation cushion during these mass meditations. I encouraged participants to pencil their deepest intention on the back of the artwork and display it in their homes as a daily reminder.

This pocket is designed to cradle your intentions. Dedicate time to sit and connect with the profound desires of your heart, pen them on a piece of paper, and tuck it into this envelope.  Let the artwork serve as a gentle reminder each time it catches your eye. Once you’ve brought a particular intention to fruition, embark on a fresh beginning.

Love, Gemma
