Deborah Forman, 2023
Gouache and pastel on paper
28"x37" sq. framed
"Hourglass Series" is inspired by the shape of this ancient clock form, and how it relates to the fleeting nature of time. All of the work is comprised from merely four tubes of paint, and the process of finding the end result is akin to safe cracking. Explorative mixing and intense trial and error is involved; lifting out and blocking in, until the color nestles in the place it is meant to be for each piece. Deborah uses the most saturated paints available (gouache and high pigment load acrylic) to maximize the brilliance of the chromatic experience for the viewer. In a painting, time can stand still and these pieces support the ideal of holding for a moment the joy and flow of color that can occur in a painting, and in life.
Deborah Forman has a BFA from RISD, an MSAE from Massachusetts College of Art, and an MFA from Parsons. She has taught Foundation Studies at Wheaton College and RISD CE for 16 years, and is the author of two instructional books - Paint Lab (2013), and Color Lab (2015) - Quarry Books.
