Ltd Ed. M.PATMOS x SELMA OPTIQUE Colab

For this exclusive, limited edition collaboration with eyewear designer Selima Salaun of Selima Optique, we approached the product with an emphasis on sustainability, craftsmanship and beauty.

In October 2013, work began on finding the ideal materials to create the perfect glasses. Selima had been interested in working with buffalo horn, a material that is unique because the water buffalo naturally sheds its horn and as Marcia often works with sustainable materials, this was an ideal match. Buffalo horn is particularly amazing because with each wear, the glasses will develop a patina, giving them a continuously brand new look throughout the life of the pair. Additionally, the frames will adjust to fit the wearer’s face from the warmth of the skin.

Each pair is handmade in France by a family-owned French atelier where artists cut the shapes with handsaws and files. The artisanal process creates every piece with careful consideration.

The inspiration behind these frames comes from a pair of vintage sunglasses that Marcia bought in Shanghai. They broke before Marcia could wear them, so she brought them to Selima to see if they could be fixed. While they couldn’t be put back together, the two designers immediately loved them for their graphic, sculptural and androgynous look. Selima has named this shape the Marcia frame.

While the sunglasses are colorblocked in a neutral palette, the opticals emulate the subtle gradiant of a horn itself, getting lighter as the horn extends away from its base.
